I chose the website About.com: Babies & Toddlers for the internet site that supports my blog on emergent literacy. The website includes useful tips on calming fears in preschoolers, early symptoms of ADD/ADHD, good toys for preschoolers, and facts about research on emergent literacy and how "the foundations of reading begin in early childhood and follow a development pattern." I fund it using the meta-search engine dogpile.com.

Competency 7: Social Networking Sites

My blog focus is the effect of library programs for preschoolers on emergent literacy.

Social Networking Site: ParentsConnect.

Although this site is not connected with a public library users have profile pages with photos, links, messaging, a bio and a blog. There are forums for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, kids, preteens, and teens. I had a difficult time finding social networking sites for preschoolers so I found one for parents of preschoolers.

There are several search sites. The following is the learning and school search site's question and answer forum:

Answer: There are several symptoms that are common among children with learning disabilities or dyslexia. If you see a pattern of these symptoms in your child, you may want to seek help. I always recommend that you first set an appointment with the child's pediatrician in order to determine if a medical problem (hearing, vision, etc) might be compromising his learning progress.

I don't understand the logic behind paying to search in databases I can search for free. The best hit I found was one I had already found in one of the TWU databases. It is a good hit but I can get it for free elsewhere. Perhaps it's because I am a rookie and I will see the purpose of DIALOG as I get more experienced at searching.

Building Block searching is my preferred type of searching. It requires thought and planning before hand but produces specific results. ASP is a user-friendly database and I am familiar with it. ASP contains a wide range of journals including Journal of Social Psychology, Family Relations, and Journal of Education. The records are easy to examine as to whether or not they are what you are searching for.
