Competency 9: Internet

I chose the website About.com: Babies & Toddlers for the internet site that supports my blog on emergent literacy. The website includes useful tips on calming fears in preschoolers, early symptoms of ADD/ADHD, good toys for preschoolers, and facts about research on emergent literacy and how "the foundations of reading begin in early childhood and follow a development pattern." I fund it using the meta-search engine dogpile.com.

Competency 8: Multimedia

I found this chart using the google search engine images. It shows perfectly how emergent literacy begins as one thing and branches out to become so many other things. It is from the following article:

Gunn, Barbara K., and Deborah C. Simmons. "Emergent Literacy: Synthesis of the Research." National Center to Improve the Tools of Educators.

Competency 7: Social Networking Sites

My blog focus is the effect of library programs for preschoolers on emergent literacy.

Social Networking Site: ParentsConnect.

Although this site is not connected with a public library users have profile pages with photos, links, messaging, a bio and a blog. There are forums for babies, toddlers, preschoolers, kids, preteens, and teens. I had a difficult time finding social networking sites for preschoolers so I found one for parents of preschoolers.

There are several search sites. The following is the learning and school search site's question and answer forum:

Question: My son is child is struggling with silent reading. How can I tell if he has a learning disability?
Answer: There are several symptoms that are common among children with learning disabilities or dyslexia. If you see a pattern of these symptoms in your child, you may want to seek help. I always recommend that you first set an appointment with the child's pediatrician in order to determine if a medical problem (hearing, vision, etc) might be compromising his learning progress.

Competency 6: Browsing in DIALOG

Search Strategy:

Dynamic Search: Library Literature and Information Science
Search for: emergent literacy in all subject words
Published from 2003 to 2007

I tried both copy and paste and print screen to duplicate DIALOG's search screen but couldn't reproduce it exactly so I've typed my search strategy.

Abstract: Participant observation, unlike the more traditional approach of querying adults about children's experiences, is identified as an appropriate and effective method for studying babies and toddlers in public library settings in order to explore these experiences from the children's own perspectives. In an observation study of eleven, thirty-minute baby storytimes conducted at two branches of a large public library system, the naturally occurring behavior of the children captured through observation field notes and audio-recording and transcription of the program successfully revealed numerous incidents of emergent literacy activities and social interaction. This article discusses the practicalities of implementing participant observation in storytime programs for very young children. Special requirements related to informed consent, the need to protect baby and toddler participants, and the challenge of gaining and maintaining access are addressed. Included is an appendix of recommended observation, child development, and research methods texts. Reprinted by permission of the publisher.

Searching in DIALOG was very frustrating. I don't understand the logic behind paying to search in databases I can search for free. The best hit I found was one I had already found in one of the TWU databases. It is a good hit but I can get it for free elsewhere. Perhaps it's because I am a rookie and I will see the purpose of DIALOG as I get more experienced at searching.
